Client Project

Project One-Internal Client Project: 14 weeks Individual Project Only The core research of NTU’s Advanced Textiles Research (ATRG) is the full integration of electronics into textiles. Today's electronic textiles are usually made by stitching components onto existing garments. ATRG are currently integrating electronics into the core of yarns to produce robust, fully flexible, machine-washable clothing. Potential applications for the technology also include the following: Retail: RFID tagging of textile products from manufacture to point of sale; Medicine: Vital signs monitoring, body chemistry monitoring, stroke rehabilitation, pressure measurement in compression garments, RFID tagging (numerous applications from stock control to use in care of those with dementia); Military: Vital signs monitoring, performance monitoring, physical condition, position and orientation monitoring, radiation monitoring, monitoring of harmful gasses, RFID tagging (numerous applications), wearable communications devices, camouflage, metamaterial devices for microwave cloaking, smart clothing with response to the environment; Sports: Performance monitoring; Architecture: Stress and strain measurement in textile roofs, ropes and textile composites. Lighting screens, flexible display screens. Aerospace: Stress, strain and temperature measurement in textile composites; Personal Electronics: Wearable computers, wearable communications devices, electronics for social interactions. Project Milestones Week 10- Read three discipline specific briefs. Choose one that you will work on for the duration of the project. Week 13- Presentation. At this 15-minute presentation you are expected to discuss your project concept, present design ideas, visuals, prototypes and detail your project management plan. You will receive written feedback at this stage. Week 19- By 3pm submit to W102 a DVD containing your week 13 presentation, completed ethics form, along with the final product and any other supporting material you consider necessary. All of these should be in a form that can be accessed from a pc with no external access. Web projects can be externally hosted but a copy of all files should also be contained on the DVD. Week 24- Individual Self-evaluation forms should be submitted to the NOW Dropbox. During the project you should update your on-line blog reflecting on your process.
